LEXIA

⸻⸻Lexia is an AI opera about artificial intelligence, climate catastrophe, and bio-adaptation.

In a future version of America radically transformed by human-made ecological cataclysm, the main character, Lexia, wanders the barren terrain in search of her lost child. As a superstorm of cataclysmic force bears down, Lexia uncovers a future path for our species via an extraordinary transformation underway for humanity: a spontaneous mutation that is causing human babies to be born with the physical characteristics of birds. An opera for voice, chamber musicians, and music AI processes, Lexia explores the outermost limits of what makes us human in an age of both ecological disaster and autonomous machines.

Lexia features the use of AVATAR, an artificial intelligence software application that performs music based on input from composers and musical improvisors by drawing information from its data bank or by listening and reacting to improvising musicians while they perform live. AVATAR infuses the music of Lexia with a unique sonic character, and presonifies the oracle-like device in the story, the Lung, a networked system created as a voice memory bank for all of human history.
